When pupils join Art and Design in Year 7 we begin with projects based on The Formal Elements. We explore ideas and collect visual information based on the basics in art and design. Students will develop skills in working with 2D and 3D media depicting tone; colour; line; shape; form and pattern. Art and Design at KS3 allows our students to explore, investigate and respond to a broad range of ideas, themes and concepts. They will have the opportunity to test out and manage a range of media, materials and creative approaches, seeking to communicate personally relevant ideas and solutions.

There are opportunities for students to discover many different art movements and influences in culture, along with specific artist research to help aid their understanding of Art & Design. KS3 pupils are encouraged to evolve their creativity into small projects throughout the year, inspiring them to design and make a purposeful and meaningful response. Pupils will develop not only their practical and analytical skills, but also their creative independence.

Portraits- Pupils will explore the work of the contemporary portrait Artist Keemo and will also be exposed to some Cubist Artists’ work such as those by Pablo Picasso & George Braque. The unit will provide students with an excellent introduction to the use of a sketchbook in which they will be encouraged to be creative and experiment. Pupils will then manipulate and distort portraits done in the style of a more contemporary artist and their outcome will be assembled in Collage and Mixed Media with understanding of Shape, Texture and Pattern.

Architecture-Pupils study the work of some of the world’s leading Architects past and present and gain a practical understanding of what Architecture is and how it can have a significant influence on society. They will develop drawing techniques using a variety of different mediums to initiate the design process. This will be enhanced by modelling using paper, card and board to produce high quality Architectural models.  Pupils will also get an introduction to computer aided design and will design and produce 3D computer generated outcomes

Graphics

Year 7s will gain an understanding of Graphic Design and the role of a Graphic Designer in society.

They will experiment with drawing typography, logos & layout. Students look at the work of Paul Thurlby and Luciano Lozano will have the chance to create personified characters and apply them to an advertising campaign.

They will utilize their analytical skills taught in Yr 7 and use their sketchbook to experiment with a broad range of 2D art materials such as watercolour, oil, pastel and paint. They will then focus on form and research ceramic artists in preparation for their clay pinch pots.  Pupils will then experiment with the clay to replicate a cell or system, using clay sculpting tools to add detail.

Textiles

David Hockney Landscapes

Students will explore the Landscape work of David Hockney. They will explore the meaning and symbolism in Landscapes with a focus on pattern and colour and produce their own artist research and designs based on Hockney's work. Students will employ and develop hand stitching skills learnt in year 7 and be introduced to new materials such as transfer inks, as well as having the opportunity to use innovative techniques such as heat pressing, to produce a final outcome.

3D Design

User centred product design, Headphone Tidy -This project builds upon the skills taught in year 7 and challenges pupils to take a new approach to designing products. They will study how to analyse the functional properties of existing products, to design by placing the needs of the user at the forefront of the design process and how to manufacture a fully working prototype. They will have the opportunity to gain skills in the workshop using a variety of different materials and techniques.  In addition to this they will learn how to use computer aided design to complement an iterative approach to design.

Graphics

In year 8, students will be introduced to the work of Jon Burgerman and wil be asked to create a new brand identity for the juice drink ‘Five Alive’. They will look at existing design and be asked to consider target audience for the juice drink. They will develop their drawing skills whilst exploring character design and use a variety of materials such as pencil, watercolour, pen, ink, collage and photography to create a logo and packing design for the juice drink.

Assessment

In Year 8 we use the baseline level to check students are making appropriate progress and to refresh their target levels.

All students are given further indication of their progress throughout the year through a variety of assessment methods. Levels and feedback are given verbally, recorded in the student planner and in their sketchbooks.
